NICK FALDO NAMED 2008 EUROPEAN RYDER CUP TEAM CAPTAIN
ORLANDO, FLORIDA - March 2, 2005 - Nick Faldo has officially been named captain of the 2008 European Ryder Cup Team in an unprecedented double announcement, also naming Ian Woosnam as the 2006 European captain. This is the first time in Ryder Cup history that the committee has named a captain so far in advance of the actual competition, a clear display of the support that Faldo has within golf.
Faldo is honored to have been chosen as captain and is looking forward to the opportunity:
"I am delighted that the committee has decided to announce the captaincy for 2008. The Ryder Cup has always been extremely important to me and I will look forward to planning for that match - but for now it is Ian's time and I wish him the best for his captaincy.
"I've spent a lot of my career in America and have always enjoyed the support of the people and the challenge of competing on the other side of the pond. I hope that my profile and success in the U.S. will be an advantage to the European team.
"This double announcement shows genuine vision on the committee's part and I look forward to working with them when the time comes for me to take the reigns. This is a proud day for me and I am extremely excited by the prospect of leading the European team on to another great Ryder Cup success."
